With many classic cocktails it’s difficult to find any information about it at all. The Singapore Sling, however, has an abundance of information and history written about it. The problem is much of it is so contradictory working out the actual history of the drink is rather difficult. With so many recipes around, which are worth making?

MxMO – Vermouth

MxMO – Vermouth

It’s been a little while since I last managed to take part in a Mixology Monday, so I’ve celebrated this months MxMO on vermouth by talking mainly about rum. However the cocktail contains vermouth, and more than makes up for it.

I’m so dizzy

I’m so dizzy

Often when I’m in a cocktail bar I’ll find myself unable to decide what to drink. When this happens I usually defer my choice to the bartender, and if I’m in a good bar I’m rarely disappointed. During my last visit to Milk and Honey the bartender came back to me with the Dizzy Sour, an interesting classic twist on the Whiskey Sour.

Vieux Carré

Vieux Carré

With less than a week to go until Tales of the Cocktail, I get in to the New Orleans mood with a classic cocktail invented in the city, the Vieux Carré. MxMO – Bourbon

Hosted by the guys at Scofflaw’s Den, this months Mixology Monday takes a look at Bourbon, one of my favourite spirits. Eager to find a new discovery I take a look at the Frisco Sour, an interesting mixture of Bourbon and Bénédictine that uses plenty of citrus resulting in a drink definitely deserving its sour name.

Raiders of the Lost Cocktail is a new monthly event held over at The Spirit World, where the challenge is to find a tasty cocktail using the featured obscure ingredient. This month that ingredient is Bénédictine, a liqueur I have covered previously and very much enjoyed, so I thought it would be fun to try [...]

As much as I love gin, after so many gin cocktails I fancied trying something a bit different this weekend. I recently travelled to France for work, and whilst there picked up a bottle of rather nice XO Calvados, so decided that was probably a good place to start.
Calvados is a French brandy that [...]

Bénédictine is a brandy-based herbal liqueur flavoured using 27 plants and spices. It was first formulated in 1510 by Dom Bernardo Vincelli, a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Fécamp. The liqueur was made here for almost 300 years as a tonic to aid the monks, until the French Revolution destroyed the monastery and put [...]

Kirsch, short for the German Kirschwasser (cherry water), is an eau de vie (French for water of life, enough languages for you yet?) – a clear brandy made from fermented fruit, in this case cherries. Kirsch is a strong alcohol (typically over 80 proof), and unlike the sweet, strongly flavoured cherry liqueurs has a very [...]
