Sex and the City: Absolut Hunk
Love it or hate it, Sex and the City introduced a whole new generation of drinkers, myself included, to the fabulous world of the cocktail. This is part of a series of posts trying out drinks featured on the show, and seeing how they stand up in the real world. Today, the Absolut Hunk.
Things have been rather serious here of late, what with bitters comparisons and historical Singapore Sling recipes, so I thought it was about time for another Sex and the City cocktail. Embarrased as I am to admit it I think the Absolut Hunk may well be the first cocktail I ever made (it’s this or the Cosmo), so I was interested to see how it shapes up now my cocktail knowledge is a little more refined.
The Absolut Hunk cocktail was created by Absolut to take advantage of the fake advertising billboard the character Smith Jerrod (Jason Lewis) appears in during season six. The ad was produced by the same agency and photographer that created the famous Absolut campaign, and Absolut were quick to take advantage of the tie-in and use it along with this cocktail. Jason Lewis didn’t take too kindly to this, but nonetheless the Absolut Hunk caught on.
Absolut Hunk
- 2 shots vanilla vodka
- ½ shot lime juice
- ½ shot sugar syrup
- ¼ shot pineapple juice
- Shake all ingredients well with ice and fine strain in to a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime twist or slice.
The Absolut Hunk presents a rather odd mixture of flavours. The vanilla, lime and pineapple don’t exactly clash, but they don’t blend particularly well either. Whereas in a great cocktail the flavours blend together to make a result greater than the sum of the parts, here they just sit distinctly, not really interacting with each other at all. The sugar syrup also seems slightly unnecessary, making the drink rather sickly and cloying. Personally, I think I’d rather just have the real Absolut Hunk…
