All About Eve

In spite of Doug, a quote from Bette Davis’ greatest, and perhaps most autobiographical, film, “All About Eve“. Davis plays Margo Channing, an egotistical theatre actress approaching the dreaded four zero, whose cool façade slowly slips away as she realises her starstruck fan, and eventual personal assistant, Eve (Anne Baxter) is lining up to replace her. The film is a gold mine of one-liners and acerbic put-downs, this being but one of them…

  1. Birdie Coonan

“There’s a message from the bartender. Does Miss Channing know she ordered domestic gin by mistake?”

  2. Margo Channing

“The only thing I ordered by mistake is the guests. They’re domestic, too, and they don’t care what they drink as long as it burns!”

I wouldn’t really call All About Eve film noir, but it is a wonderful film. Bette Davis at her best. Sunset Blvd. is great too – 1950 was a good year for films!
