Back in Britain, and very tired, a brief roundup of my adventures in the States and my highlights of Tales of the Cocktail. Also, find out who was lucky enough to win my bitters give-away and see if you are the person who will soon be receiving bottles of The Bitter Truth and Hermes bitters in the mail.
The first night of fun in New Orleans – Tales of the Cocktail 2008 starts here!
The small doorway off West Houston Street that leads to The Pegu Club is easy to miss, with little to hint at what lies beyond other than the neon lit logo of the bar. Once inside though you’ll find a beautifully decorated bar, a dizzying array of spirits, and some of the nicest cocktails I’ve ever tasted.
On Sunday when I got in to New York I was very tempted to have an early night. However, given that I’ve only got a few nights in New York before and after Tales I figured I should make the effort and head out. After a quick ride on the 1, and a slight detour as I headed west out of the station not east, I arrived at the Flatiron Lounge.
My bags are packed. My hotel reservations are printed out. I’ve checked-in online for my outbound flight. I’m ready to go! For the next two weeks I will be in the United States attending Tales of the Cocktail and also visiting New York City. Read on for live updates and photos of my American adventures.
With less than a week to go until Tales of the Cocktail, I get in to the New Orleans mood with a classic cocktail invented in the city, the Vieux Carré. Created at the Hotel Monteleone in 1938 this drink makes for a perfect pre-Tales warm up drink. Between this and the Sazerac New Orleans has a lot to be proud of!
When try to find spirits to use in their drinks, most people will settle for a brand they like even if it isn’t exactly what they are looking for. Martin Miller isn’t like most people though, and when he found none of the gins he had tried made the grade, he decided to make his own. Is there method to his madness?
It doesn’t seem like long ago I was deciding whether or not to make the trip to Tales of the Cocktail this year. Time does, as they say, fly though and with any luck by this time next week I will have done the same and be in the Big Apple on the first leg of my trip to the States. I cannot begin to describe how excited I am!
After several months of delays the brand new design for Oh Gosh! is now live, and to celebrate one lucky reader will win four highly sought-after bitters – Hermes Orange bitters, Hermes Aromatic bitters, The Bitter Truth Celery bitters and The Bitter Truth Jerry Thomas’ Own Decanter bitters.
While most cocktail recipes call for just a few dashes of bitters, others take things a little further. Valentino Bolognese recently won the European heat of the Angostura Global Cocktail Challenge with two cocktails that used bitters as major components, but do these intensely flavoured ingredients work when used in such large amounts?
